Description

With the intensifying severity of climate change, the role of electric vehicles as a critical solution for mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the road transport sector has been underscored. However, lithium-ion batteries, a central component of electric vehicles, are known to significantly contribute to GHG emissions due to their use of energy-intensive materials and manufacturing processes. Thus, a global urgency has arisen for the implementation of battery recycling and reuse strategies to minimize GHG emissions related to batteries. This study aims to identifying the primary GHG emission factors by quantifying the carbon footprint of electric vehicle batteries and to evaluate the GHG reduction benefits achieved through battery recycling and reuse. We assess the GHG emissions generated over the entire process and over the battery's lifespan for supplying 1kWh of energy to the vehicle's powertrain. This assessment includes quantifying the carbon footprint from raw material mining and refining, battery manufacturing, battery usage, and the recycling and reuse process. The findings of this study suggest that recycling and reuse can greatly contribute to the reduction of GHGs, particularly emphasizing the critical role of material recovery via the recycling processes following battery reuse. This study can contribute to minimizing GHG emissions throughout the full process of electric vehicle battery manufacturing and affirms the necessity and feasibility of the waste battery reuse and recycling industry.
