International Trends in Green Shipbuilding and Response in The Republic of Korea

Speaker

Description

Recently, as order for Green ships have increased in earnest around the world, international shipping companies are adopting eco-friendly alternative fuels suitable for their fleets and their own industrial environments. In addition, global shipping companies are making great efforts to build a supply chain to smoothly supply the adopted fuel to their ships.
The Republic of Korea is also making efforts to positively make and review various policies and support the industry for the development and application of various alternative fuels for ships based on the 'Eco-friendly Ship Act' that has been enforced since 2020.
Orders for ‘LNG Ready’ ships, which were introduced with the aim of commercializing Green fuel for ships, are currently slightly decreasing, and ships using LNG and methanol fuel propulsion are gradually increasing in international shipping.
In addition, in the small passenger ship sector, orders for hybrid electric propulsion ships using batteries, mainly in Europe, have recently been on the rise. In the past, it was difficult to apply the battery to ships due to problems such as space and cost of batteries, but with the development of technology, orders for battery-powered ships are actively being made in the small ship sector.
A key issue of the global green ship order trend is the increase in methanol fuel-powered ships. Methanol fuel is a traditional chemical material used for various purposes in the petrochemical industry sector. For the stable operation and settlement of methanol-fueled ships, the current issue in the shipping sector is to establish a supply chain for eco-friendly fuels such as bio-methanol or e-methanol.
MAERSK and CMA CGM shipping companies are actively pursuing orders for methanol-powered ships, and they are actively establishing various cooperative MoUs with green methanol specialized institutions in Asia and Europe to smoothly produce and supply green methanol in the future.
The Republic of Korea also needs to build an industrial environment so that shipping companies can cooperate with energy companies to build a supply chain for eco-friendly alternative fuels for ships. And most of all, the Port Authority should take the lead in enhancing competitiveness in the smooth supply of alternative fuels to ships.
