Description

The Korea national R&D project named “Innovative Eco-friendly Ship Technology Development” was launched from 2022 with the support of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to localize key technologies for reducing GHG emission at least 70% to satisfy the IMO regulation. The project will be carried out for 10 years and the “KORIES” (Korea ORganization for Innovative Eco-friendly Ship technology development“) would managing the project.
Through this project, localized technologies related to ammonia fuel supply system, ammonia engine system, and ammonia fuel cell system are expected to be secured. In addition, core equipment for electric propulsion ships such as switchboards, inverters, converters and electric propulsion units will also be localized.
To ensure connectivity of each sub-project and outcomes, KORIES will coordinated based on the technology development road map which reflects opinions of experts from various fields.
At the last stage, the ship equipped all developed system during the project will be designed to verify whether the project goal (Reduction GHG emission from the ship at least 70%) is achieved or not.
Because the fuel change from hydrocarbon fuel to carbon-neutral fuel and applying electric-powered hybrid propulsion system are expected significantly reduce GHG emission, it is looked forward that the goal can be achieved without difficulty.
The international standardization (ISO/IEC) and IMO activities are also planned in this project to promote the spread of developed technologies
